Funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) stands as the nation’s largest youth employment initiative. It seamlessly connects NYC youth, aged 14 to 24, with enriching career exploration opportunities and valuable paid work experiences every summer.
Engaging in meticulously structured projects and work-based activities, NYC youth under SYEP gain essential skills, equipping them for future careers.
Inwood Community Services, Inc. (ICS) has been a dedicated sponsor of the SYEP Program. In 2009, Inwood Community Services, was granted the opportunity to directly host and provide employment opportunities to the youth in Inwood and surrounding communities. Over the years, ICS has sponsored youth aged 14-24, currently offering SYEP Community-Based and CareerREADY services options.
CareerReady WLG offers young people ages 16 to 21 from select public schools in New York City an opportunity to strengthen work readiness skills, explore careers, and receive academic support, including guidance on postsecondary education and the potential to earn college credit.
As part of ICS’s Youth Department, the SYEP & WLG youth employment programs are aligned with ICS’s mission to facilitate youth development through empowerment, prevention, and intervention.
To apply for the 2024 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), follow these straightforward steps:
DEADLINE to apply is 03/01/2024
The Community-Based service option offers career exploration opportunities and paid work experience to NYC youth aged 14 to 24! Youth will acquire real-world work experience and enhance their skill set.
Participants in this service option are selected via randomized lottery & work for six weeks in July & August.
The CareerREADY service option is
tailored for students aged 14 to 21 enrolled in specific DOE schools. CareerReady SYEP offers career exploration opportunities and paid work experience. Students work for six weeks in July & August.
Selection of students in this service option is conducted by the participating schools rather than the online lottery.
The CareerREADY WLG program represents an expanded offering of the CareerREADY SYEP service, specifically designed to provide year-round paid work experience for students aged 16 to 21.
To be eligible for the WLG program, students must have participated in the concurrent SYEP program for the respective year.
“I wanted to let you know how appreciative I am of the SYEP program. Matt is so happy, he enjoys the administrators and the other young adults he works with, along with getting paid. The evaluations are a huge boost to his confidence. He was so proud. Again thank you – the program has been a gift to Matt.”
-Jean Kunzman
