Tomas, a committed Community Affairs Specialist at Inwood Community Services (ICS), has passionately championed causes including substance abuse recovery; mental health; tenant rights; and at-risk youth, over the last 30 years – enhancing the lives of Inwood and Washington Heights residents. Tomas began his career in 1992 at ICS, as an Outreach Worker. He engaged directly with the community to provide crucial information on women’s health services. Tomas then worked as a Counselor providing focus groups for those recovering from substance abuse, guiding them towards a better quality of life.
In 2000, Tomas helped develop UNIDOS Inwood Coalition, a collective that conducted research on local businesses that were providing alcohol to underaged youth. This resulted in preventing at-risk youth from falling into the depths of substance abuse, leaving a lasting impact on the neighborhood. Tomas took on a pivotal role in guiding young individuals as a Youth Program Director at ICS from 2007 to 2011. He empowered at-risk youth, helping them navigate the intricacies of the education system and inspiring them to realize their full potential despite the hardships that come with recently immigrating to the U.S. Transitioning seamlessly into his current role as a Community Affairs Specialist in 2011, Tomas emerged as a crucial link between the community and local government. His initiatives include the organization of street fairs and collaboration with PTA associations. Tomas also regularly attends community meetings at the 34th Precinct, fostering healthy relationships between residents and the police.
Most importantly, however, Tomas takes pride in being a devoted father of three young adults, who are making their own positive and proactive contributors to society.
“I would love for all youth to have the opportunity to reach their full potential and become active, successful leaders!”
